Healthy Feet are Happy Feet
Good hygiene is an essential aspect of foot care and it is recommended that you should wash your feet daily. Washing will clear away the everyday film of dirt and sweat and help to prevent the risk of infection. It is particularly important to remember to wash (and dry thoroughly) between the toes where dirt and bacteria commonly gather.
Treating your feet to a long hot soak at the end of the day feels really good but be careful about very hot water in the cold weather as a freezing foot hitting hot water can sometimes result in chilblains forming as the constricted blood vessels expand too fast.
If you are suffering from Athlete's Foot or fungal conditions be careful about spreading the fungus and always ensure that you put any used towels straight in the laundry bin as bacteria and fungi can lie dormant for up to four weeks.
Remove rough hard skin with regular use of an exfoliating product to prevent hard skin and calluses. Pumice stones and foot files are great ways to remove hard skin and re-invigorate healthy cell growth below. The secret to successful hard skin removal with a foot file or pumice stone is to use an even regular rubbing motion and not to push down too hard or exert pressure in the same place for too long. (This can irritate the skin cells deeper below the surface). You should also take extra care where the hardened skin sits close to a prominent bone or joint as too much friction may be painful or cause the skin to break open.
After washing and exfoliation follow this by moisturising. Regular trimming of your toenails is the best way of keeping them in shape leaving them to get too long lets the nail thicken and harden and might allow them to harm the surrounding skin. Never cut too close to the skin as this can cause soreness, abrasion and potential infection, and never pull at a hanging nail. Avoid digging at dirt trapped beneath nails with any sharp tool as this may cause damage to the skin.
When it comes to socks tights and other hosiery wear new sets every day as this will help to ensure that your feet are fresh and odour free.
Try to wear different shoes each day if you can as this will help to avoid the conditions where bacteria and fungi can gather.
